Is retiring in Costa Rica a good idea?

Country Latin America Updated May 2026

Costa Rica is one of Latin Americaโ€™s most popular retirement destinations for good reason. A moderate retiree lifestyle costs around $1,550 per person per month, the Pensionado visa requires only $1,000 monthly pension income, and the public Caja healthcare system is excellent and inexpensive. The country offers political stability with no standing military for over 70 years, high literacy, year-round tropical climate, and a substantial English-speaking expat community. Trade-offs to weigh: imported goods are expensive, infrastructure outside the central valley is patchy, and rainy season from May through November is intense. Crime exists but is mostly opportunistic in tourist areas. For most US and Canadian retirees with moderate pensions, Costa Rica works well.
