Is Israel expensive to live in?

Country Asia Updated July 2026

Israel is expensive by global standards and very expensive in Tel Aviv. The CostLiving moderate benchmark for Israel is $3,325 a month per person, modestly above Australia ($3,125) and a touch below the US average ($3,525). The composition is unusual: housing in central Tel Aviv ($1,500 to $2,500 for a one-bedroom) and groceries are well above European levels, while subsidised public transport, dental care, and many staples remain manageable. Imported goods, cars, and electronics carry significant duties. Outside Tel Aviv, costs drop sharply: Haifa, Beersheba, and most of the periphery run 20 to 35 percent cheaper than the national moderate figure. Wages in tech and finance are competitive with US salaries; wages outside those sectors lag the cost base meaningfully. For the full picture, see our Israel cost of living page.
