Is it hard to move to Prague from the USA?

City Europe Updated July 2026

Moving to Prague from the USA is more involved than an EU-internal move but is well-trodden. The single biggest hurdle is securing a long-term visa before you arrive, applied for at a Czech consulate in the US (most commonly via the New York, Los Angeles, or Chicago offices). The Zivno (self-employed) visa is the most popular route for remote workers and freelancers, with required proof of funds (roughly CZK 124,500 in a Czech bank account, around $5,500), a Czech business address, and trade-licence registration. Employment routes need a contract with a Czech employer. Once approved, the process typically runs 60 to 120 days end-to-end. Healthcare, banking, and a long-term lease are the standard post-arrival steps. Pragueโ€™s moderate cost of living at $2,575 per person per month gives most movers significant breathing room versus US costs. For the full picture, see our Prague cost of living page.
