Is the Czech Republic a good place for Americans to retire?

City Europe Updated July 2026

The Czech Republic is a credible retirement option for Americans, though it is not built around a formal retiree visa the way Portugal or Panama are. Most American retirees enter via a long-term residence permit on grounds of sufficient income and private health insurance, or via the family reunification route. There is no specific minimum-pension threshold, but applicants need to demonstrate stable monthly income roughly equivalent to the Czech minimum subsistence level (around CZK 16,000 to CZK 20,000 per person depending on household, about $725 to $900) plus housing costs. Pragueโ€™s moderate cost of living at $2,575 per person per month leaves Social Security and most US pensions in comfortable range. Healthcare is high quality and substantially cheaper than the US system, though private cover is required pre-residency. Outside Prague, costs drop materially.
