How much is rent in Kenya in US dollars?

Country Africa Updated July 2026

Rent in Kenya runs roughly USD 200 to 600 a month for a one-bedroom in a safe, central area of Nairobi, with the moderate-tier housing benchmark sitting at $314 a month country-wide. Expat-favoured Nairobi neighbourhoods (Kileleshwa, Lavington, Westlands, Karen, Riverside) run USD 600 to 1,500 a month for a furnished one- or two-bedroom in a secure compound. Mombasa coastal properties in Nyali and Bamburi run USD 400 to 1,200 for similar standards. Outside the major centres, modest one-bedrooms in market towns run USD 150 to 300. Service charge for security, water, garbage, and shared facilities adds USD 30 to 100 a month in apartment compounds. Rent is typically quoted in KES but accepted in either currency by most expat-facing landlords. For the full picture, see our Kenya cost of living page.
