Is it cheaper to live in Puerto Rico than the US?

Territory USA Updated May 2026

Not by much, and in some cases it is more expensive. A moderate lifestyle in Puerto Rico costs around $3,600 per person per month, basically tied with Florida ($3,575) and slightly below New York City ($3,975). Miami ($2,975) and Los Angeles ($3,000) both come in cheaper than Puerto Rico. The cost gap to the mainland has narrowed significantly as imported goods, electricity, and housing have risen on the island. Housing remains the biggest variable: a modest apartment outside San Juan runs $600 to $1,200, while San Juan itself can match mainland city pricing. Imported groceries run 15 to 25 percent above mainland prices because nearly everything has to ship in by sea.
