How much money do you need to live in the US Virgin Islands?

Region Caribbean Updated July 2026

Across the USVI as a whole, a single-person moderate budget runs $3,775 per month, with St Croix slightly cheaper ($3,600) and St Thomas pricier ($3,975). Housing is the single biggest line by a wide margin. On St Croix, a one-bedroom in or near Christiansted or Frederiksted typically runs $1,800 to $2,800, with newer or beach-adjacent properties at $3,000 to $4,500. Utilities are an island-specific surprise: WAPA electricity rates run roughly three to four times mainland US averages, easily $250 to $600 a month for a one-bedroom with AC. Groceries run 25 to 50 percent above mainland prices because of shipping. Budget-tier living on $2,160 a month is possible with a flatshare or modest housing. A two-person household typically needs $5,500 to $6,500 a month. For the full breakdown, see our St Croix cost of living page.
