Is it expensive to live in St Croix?

Region Caribbean Updated July 2026

St Croix is moderately expensive by US standards: $3,600 per person per month at the moderate tier sits about 2 percent above the US average ($3,525) and well below high-cost mainland metros. The expensive lines are housing, utilities, and imported goods. WAPA electricity rates run roughly three to four times mainland averages, so a one-bedroom with AC easily generates $250 to $600 monthly electric bills. Groceries run 25 to 50 percent above mainland US prices because virtually everything is shipped in. The cheap lines are property taxes (among the lowest in the US system), no state income tax on top of the local mirror-code tax, and modest transport costs for short island commutes. St Croix runs roughly $375 a month cheaper than St Thomas ($3,975) thanks to lower housing demand. For the full cost picture, see our St Croix cost of living page.
