At the early-September 2026 rate of about 1.38 Canadian dollars to the US dollar, CostLiving’s Vancouver moderate benchmark of $2,875 per person per month works out at about CAD 3,967. CAD 4,000 clears that by roughly CAD 33, which is on the line rather than above it: a rent rise or a weaker Canadian dollar erases the margin entirely.
Elsewhere the headroom is genuine. Calgary’s moderate benchmark of $2,175 is about CAD 3,001 and Toronto’s $2,600 is about CAD 3,588, so CAD 4,000 leaves roughly CAD 1,000 and CAD 400 respectively.
Read the question in US dollars and the picture improves, but it still does not reach the top tier in Vancouver. USD 4,000 is about CAD 5,520. That clears Calgary’s comfortable benchmark of $3,370 (about CAD 4,651) by roughly CAD 870, but falls about CAD 630 short of Vancouver’s comfortable benchmark of $4,455 (about CAD 6,148).
