Can a US citizen live in Hong Kong?

City Asia Updated July 2026

Yes. US citizens can enter Hong Kong visa-free for up to 90 days as a tourist. For longer stays you need an entry visa: the main routes are an employment visa (employer-sponsored, by far the most common route), the Quality Migrant Admission Scheme (a points-based path for skilled professionals with no offer required), the Top Talent Pass Scheme (open to recent graduates of top global universities and high-earners), and dependent visas for spouses or children of resident workers. Property purchase does not grant residency. After seven years of continuous residence on a qualifying visa you can apply for permanent residency. US citizens remain liable for US federal tax filing while living abroad; Hong Kongโ€™s separate tax system means most income is taxed under HKโ€™s territorial system at much lower rates.
