Is Hong Kong cheap for US citizens?

City Asia Updated July 2026

Hong Kong is modestly more expensive than the US average on totals: $3,725 against $3,525, a gap of $200 a month. The comparison shifts heavily by US baseline. For someone moving from New York ($5,775) or Los Angeles ($5,050), Hong Kong is meaningfully cheaper. For someone moving from a mid-tier US metro (Austin, Denver, Atlanta at roughly $3,200 to $3,600), it is close to a wash. For someone moving from Mississippi ($3,025) or Alabama ($3,100), Hong Kong is noticeably more expensive. The other factor is tax. Hong Kongโ€™s salary tax caps at 15 percent on a standard-rate basis and there is no general sales tax, so a high-earning professional often keeps more take-home in Hong Kong than in California or New York even at the same headline cost of living.
